Dangers for Motorcyclists

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drivers are at fault in two-thirds of accidents that involve a motorcycle and a car.

Situations that usually lead to such accidents include:

  • a car that turns left in the motorcyclist’s path;
  • a motorist who fails to check their blind spot before switching lanes;
  • hazardous conditions such as debris, which may force the motorcyclist to take action that the driver did not anticipate; and
  • visual obstructions.

Accidents can cause serious injury to a motorcyclist, even when a helmet is worn.

Injuries common among motorcyclists include:

  • cerebral hematoma, which is bleeding from the brain;
  • lung damage or fractured ribs;
  • neck and spinal cord trauma;
  • spleen and liver damage;
  • broken arms and legs, as well as a fractured pelvis; and
  • abrasions (from scraping the pavement).

Medical treatment after a motorcycle accident is costly, especially for injuries that involve the spinal cord and head. A Palm Beach motorcycle attorney can help by gathering and analyzing the necessary evidence to hold the negligent parties liable in your South Florida motorcycle accident.

The Sun-Sentinel reports that 30-year-old Arturo Gomez was riding with passenger Kathryn George, 24, on his Honda motorcycle Wednesday evening. The pair came to the intersection of North Military Trail and Community Drive where Gomez attempted to make a U-turn.
